The Peranakan, or Straits-born Chinese also more commonly known as ‘baba-yaya’, are the descendants of Hokkien Chinese immigrants who came to the Malay Archipelago from the 15th century and married locally. Their Chinese heritage was then influenced by local Thai customs and also that of European traders coming to Phuket island.
