In 1992, Frontierland inside the Walt Disney World Resort's Magic Kingdom opened the newest of its mountain attractions called Splash Mountain. Splash Mountain reaches a height of 87 feet and is comprised of 5 stories of thrilling adventure. Just by looking at the mountain you may be surprised to learn that it actually covers 9.2 acres of prime Magic Kingdom real estate.
Splash Mountain is based on the Disney film classic "Song Of The South". Many of the characters from the film are included in the attraction through the magic of Disney's famous audio-animatronic figures. Most notably is the three main characters; Brer-Rabbit, Brer-Fox and Brer-Bear, with Brer-Frog acting as narrator.
Guests board hollowed out logs at the attraction's boarding area. From there the ride meanders through its five stories where the story of Brer-Rabbit unfolds. Brer-Rabbit is the ever adventuring type of rabbit who can't stay put in the safety of his home and is ever on the move for fun. In the Splash Mountain version of "Song Of The South" Brer-Rabbit has done just that. His arch enemies Brer-Fox and Brer-Bear take the opportunity to try and capture him.
The story continues to unfold amidst the largest group of audio-animatronic figures WDW has ever assembled in one attraction.
"Hey, I saw a huge drop as I walked toward Splash Mountain, what is that all about?
The drop at the end of the attraction is one of its most thrilling features. Guest will crest the top of the mountain from its caverns to catch a quick and spectacular glimpse of the Magic Kingdom. From there its all downhill. Your log will plunge down the mountain's five story height at a 47 degree descent in the briar patch below at speeds of up to 40 mph.
"What about Brer-Rabbit? Did he elude Fox and Bear?"
Well you'll have to brave the mountain to find out.
"Will I get wet?"
More than likely your bound to get a little wet, some of the log's passengers more than others. It's unlikely you'll get drenched though. You're more likely to get soaked standing in front of the mountain watching the riders descend the drop.
